The Right Way to Build Lookalike Audiences in 2024

Start with 1% lookalikes based on high-value customers, not just all purchasers.

Why This Matters

A lookalike based on your top 10% of customers by lifetime value will outperform one based on all purchasers. Quality of the source matters more than quantity.

How To Implement

1. Export your top customers by revenue from your CRM or Shopify.

2. Upload as a Customer List in Audiences → Create Audience → Custom Audience → Customer List.

3. Wait 24-48 hours for Meta to match the data.

4. Create a Lookalike: Audiences → Create Audience → Lookalike Audience.

5. Select your high-value customer list as the source.

6. Start with 1% (most similar), then test 1-3% and 3-5% as separate ad sets.

Pro Tip

Create 'stacked' lookalikes: run 1%, 1-3%, and 3-5% as separate ad sets in the same campaign. Exclude narrower audiences from broader ones to avoid overlap.
